I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the obsession many organizations and leaders have with ROI, as I think there is another measurement that is actually more important. This is not to dismiss the importance of ROI in any way, but rather to say we need to broaden our thinking.

Leaders can be stopped in their tracks when confronted by difficult decisions that have significant repercussions.
The thinking most often goes something like, “I can play it safe or I can make this move, trusting that it works out as I hope it will.” To stay the course seems safe. To change course feels really risky. After all, you’re comfortable with what is familiar.

With the evolution of groups like Charity Navigator, the Better Business Bureau, and others that focus on the ratio of overhead costs to delivery of services, there has been an increased effort by charities to communicate more information about fundraising costs, administrative costs, and other overhead costs to demonstrate they are efficient. This expresses itself in nearly every part of an organization’s fundraising program.
But The Boston Globe‘s Leon Neyfakh points to a body of research that shows what ultimately moves people to give… and that serves as a word of caution to us as fundraisers.

As I thought about a recent awful in-flight experience, my mind went to some of the research we’ve done that exposes the fact that too many charities treat their donors in exactly the same way. The internal team doesn’t think about the donor experience, they just focus on whatever they think their job is.

Over the years, I’ve engaged with organizations where the work of the organization and/or its fundraising program has been hampered – even damaged – by obstructionists.
Obstructionists are people who live in denial. They know deep in their heart that they don’t fully measure up to the job they’ve been called to do, so they deflect and obstruct, holding onto their power with a death grip.
